The 2024 race is on the horizon, and the primaries start in January. While both races look to be locked up with GOP leader Donald Trump and incumbent president Joe Biden possibly set to square off once again, that doesn’t necessarily mean everything is settled. Trump still faces a myriad of charges, most without merit from the Democrats, and every new accusation increases the former president’s popularity. On the Democrat side, Joe Biden is dealing with some of the worst approval ratings for a president in modern history, and his platform of ‘Bidenomics” has fallen on deaf ears as most folks struggle to put presents under the Christmas tree this season.
As Trump’s popularity surges, especially with blacks and Hispanics, the current president reportedly isn’t pleased at all with poll numbers, and is growing increasingly frustrated with his team as they look for a path for reelection in 2024. Anonymous sources in the White House have indicated that Biden is miffed by his numbers as Trump leads virtually every poll, particularly in the key swing states that Biden allegedly won in 2020.
According to most polls, Trump leads in six of seven swing states. Further, according to NBC News, Trump leads Biden by two points, and Fox News has Trump up by four points. While it clearly is still early, these types of numbers historically mean bad things for the trailing candidate in terms of the election in November. There clearly is a sense of panic in the Democrat camp.
A nameless source told the Washington Post that Biden was frustrated that his economic message wasn’t moving the needle with an American public frustrated with high prices and little relief on the horizon. Further, as Biden falls in the polls compared to Trump, he and his team have “grown upset that they are not making more progress,” the Washington Post reported.
As things grow more bleak for Biden, he grows more impatient with the media. On Sunday in Wilmington, Delaware, when a reporter asked Biden why he was losing to Trump in the polls, the president snapped: “You’re reading the wrong polls.”
It is unclear what polls Biden is reading, as he is losing basically all of the polls of note. Even a recent Wall Street Journal poll held an ominous warning for Team Biden. After seeing the President’s approval rating at a paltry 37 percent, David Axelrod commented: “You know, job approval down, ratings generally down, most of the comparatives with Trump … not good. You know what I worry about … from a Biden standpoint is there are the kinds of things you get when people are starting to rationalize their votes — ‘Oh, look. They’re ready to fire Biden. That’s a problem. And they just put out another photo op with the Bidenomics sign next to him. … It’s just unbelievable to me.”
It is clear that Bidenomics hasn’t resonated with most Americans as they struggle with credit card debt, lower real wages, high inflation, and high prices across the board. Many folks are reminiscing on the Trump Administration as the “good times,” as they recall what cheap energy, a secure border, and peace in the Middle East were like just a few short years ago.
In the big picture, polls are just a snapshot of the public perception at any given time, but it’s clear that Americans are angry, frustrated, and ready for a change. Is it bad enough yet for many on the fence to swing their support behind President Trump? It remains to be seen, but for now, it is looking pretty positive for 2024.
