My granny used to call this ‘Chocolate Heaven Cake’ even though it goes by another name and now I know why! Too good!

Mounds Cake is a delightful dessert that blends the rich flavors of chocolate and coconut, echoing the beloved Mounds candy bar many have cherished over the years. As a poke cake, it takes on an extra level of moisture and decadence. With origins in the classic American poke cake tradition—where cooks would “poke” holes into a baked cake and pour in a sweet liquid to add flavor and softness—this modern twist replaces traditional fillings with a coconut-inspired syrup. This spin-off is perfect for those who adore the combination of chocolate and coconut and enjoy the convenience of using a boxed cake mix.

This casserole-style Mounds Poke Cake is a crowd-pleaser that can easily serve as the centerpiece of your dessert table. To complement its chocolatey goodness, consider serving it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. If you’re looking to balance its sweetness, a cup of strong coffee or a glass of cold milk makes for a perfect pairing. For an extra-indulgent experience, you might even top each serving with a sprinkle of toasted coconut flakes or almond slivers to echo the original Mounds candy inspiration.

Mounds Poke Cake

Ingredients:
1 box of chocolate cake mix (and the ingredients called for on the box, usually water, oil, and eggs)
1 (14 oz) can of sweetened condensed milk
1 (15 oz) can of coconut cream
1 (7 oz) package of shredded sweetened coconut
1 (12 oz) container of chocolate frosting
Optional: additional shredded coconut or almond slivers for garnish
Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on the cake mix box. Typically, this is around 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
2. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to package directions. Pour the batter into a greased 9×13 inch casserole dish.
3. Bake the cake for the time specified on the box, usually between 25-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
4. While the cake is still warm, poke holes throughout the cake using the handle of a wooden spoon or a similar instrument.
5. In a medium bowl, mix together the sweetened condensed milk and coconut cream. Pour this mixture over the cake, aiming to fill the holes.
6. Allow the cake to cool completely, which will enable it to absorb the milk mixture thoroughly.
7. Once cooled, spread the shredded sweetened coconut evenly over the top of the cake.
8. Heat the chocolate frosting in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds, or until it reaches a pourable consistency. Pour the frosting evenly over the coconut layer.
9. If desired, garnish with additional shredded coconut or almond slivers for added texture and flavor.
10. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to set before serving. This will make cutting the cake into pieces easier and allow the flavors to meld.

Enjoy your Mounds Poke Cake as the perfect treat to celebrate any occasion or just to satisfy your sweet tooth with its irresistible coconut and chocolate harmony.
